Eddie Piller has been a respected broadcaster for more than a decade, but has spent many more years pulling the strings behind the scenes as a tastemaker in the music industry. In his early 20s he became a label manager at the legendary Stiff Records, signing acts such as The Prisoners (forerunner of The James Taylor Quartet), before setting up the Acid Jazz label with Gilles Peterson. He later helped to transform the fortunes of east London’s then ungroovy Hoxton area when he set up the Blue Note club which helped to establish acts such as Goldie and Talvin Singh. The area has never looked back, even if the club is no longer there.
He began on air as a presenter of the influential Newbeats show on JazzFM in the mid 90s, with a diet of progressive, nu-jazz, soul, funk and breakbeats, later broadcasting for Radio London and BBC 6 Music, as well as creating an ITV series on youth culture. A love of music was clearly in Eddie’s genes - his mum was the organiser of the Small Faces fan club in the mid 1960s.
 On Eddie's show on October 31 he welcomed Andy Lewis - DJ, producer and current bass player in the Paul Weller band.
Lewis has been described as 'the godfather of britpop'. Original dj at the legendary Lemon Tree in Camden, which hosted the first ever britpop club, Blow Up, he was also the original tour DJ for Blur. But playing records was never enough. He graduated to bass in Pimlico, produced indie band Spearmint and last year had a top 40 hit with his solo single Are You Trying To Be Lonely which featured Paul Weller on vocals. More recently he has been in the studio with Kevin Rowland, working on the new and long awaited Dexy's Midnight Runners album, as well as performing bass and cello duties with Weller on his world tour. In short he's a very busy man but he has found time to sit in with Eddie to present a unique "6 by 6" of his fave northern soul tunes on this week's show.
